Hi Everyone,

I'm in Brisbane at Clarion South at the moment.

Clarion South is a 6-week intensive residential science fiction/fantasy writing course.

I've been meaning to get a LiveJournal account for a while and some of the other students here have a LJ account, so I thought it would be a good time to create a LJ account.

I'm really enjoying Clarion South.  It's been a lot of fun.  I've learned a lot and met some great people.

There were some complications because some of the tutors cancelled (it was particularly disappointing that Kelly Link couldn't make it), but the replacement tutors lined up sound promising.

The first two weeks we had Sean Williams as a tutor.  He's such a nice guy and a great writer.  I have very similar tastes to Sean in terms of reading and writing, so I found his feedback on my stories particularly useful.

The third week we had Margo Lanagan, who has written a lot of award-winning stories.  She was very nice and helpful, but I didn't connect with her the same way I did with Sean.

On the weekend we went to the Aurealis Awards and a genre writing industry seminar on the weekend.  I went to the first Aurealis Awards years ago in Melbourne.  The Awards ceremony has changed a lot since then!  A lot bigger.

This week we have Jack Dann as a tutor.  He has a very different style to the other tutors.  It's been really interesting to get more of an editor's (as opposed to a writer's) perspective on stories.  I think I have different reading tastes to him, so I'm not sure what he'll make of my story, which is due to be critiqued tomorrow.

I didn't go to bed last night.  I was up all night working on my Cuban superhero story.  It took a long time to finish and I'm not sure I managed to pack all of the dialog and characters into a working story.  And I think maybe some of the story might not make much sense unless you're familiar with Cuban history.  So I'm not sure what the reaction to the story will be.

No sleep makes Aidan grumpy.  So it will be an early night for me tonight.
